What is Amerex Charge 14538?

Amerex PN 14538 is the Halotron I recharge kit — the adapter, hose and quick-connect set that manual 14795 specifies for recharging Amerex Halotron I extinguishers from a Model 891 or 892 charge cylinder or from a reclaim cylinder. The kit holds the 14569 aluminum-valve fill adapter with its 01532 o-ring, the 14568 brass-valve fill adapter with its 06978 gasket, two 14648 CGA fill adapter assemblies, a six-foot 14537 hose assembly, five male quick connects, a 01733 toggle valve and two 14535 female quick connects. Amerex uses chloroprene-based or EPDM rubber in all its o-rings, valve stem seals and recharge kit seals; the elastomers used with Halon 1211 or dry chemical are not compatible with Halotron I. Halotron I work uses argon, never nitrogen, and is for trained technicians.

Amerex Charge 14538 questions

What is the Amerex 14538?

The Amerex Halotron I Recharge Kit — the fill adapters, hose, quick connects and toggle valve manual 14795 specifies for Halotron I recharging and agent reclaim.

What comes in the kit?

One 14569 aluminum-valve fill adapter and 01532 o-ring, one 14568 brass-valve fill adapter and 06978 gasket, two 14648 CGA fill adapter assemblies, one 14537 six-foot hose assembly, four 14536 male quick connects, one 01406 male quick connect, one 01733 toggle valve and two 14535 female quick connects.

What else is needed to recharge a Halotron I extinguisher?

A Model 891 (80 lb) or 892 (200 lb) Halotron I charge cylinder, an argon cylinder with a regulator, and a vacuum pump capable of pulling at least 27 inches of mercury.

Why are there two fill adapters?

Amerex Halotron I extinguishers use either an aluminum valve or a brass valve. The 14569 adapter serves aluminum-valve models and the 14568 adapter serves brass-valve models.

Can nitrogen be used with this kit?

No. Manual 14795 states nitrogen shall not be used to pressurize Halotron I extinguishers or charge cylinders. Argon is required, at 99.998% assay minimum with a −90°F dew point.

Why do the seals matter?

Elastomers used with Halon 1211 or dry chemical are not compatible with Halotron I. Amerex uses chloroprene-based or EPDM rubber in all o-rings, valve stem seals and recharge kit seals; incompatible elastomers can cause pressure loss or block the valve.

Is this kit a pressurized item?

No. The PN 14538 parts table in manual 14795 lists only fill adapters, a hose assembly, quick connects, a toggle valve and seals — no charged cylinder.

Who should use it?

Trained technicians. Recharging with Halotron I involves a pressurized liquid and high pressure gas and shall only be undertaken by personnel trained in handling these materials.
