Amerex's catalog lists seven different brackets for a single 5 lb ABC extinguisher: the 818 and 821 steel straps, the 2-strap 818S and 821S, the 861H, the box-type 807, and the 860 rubber strap. Same extinguisher, same 4.25-inch cylinder. The difference isn't fit — it's duty, and fifty thousand miles of washboard road will find the wrong answer.

Amerex builds five distinct constructions, each with published replacement parts.
What a vehicle bracket actually has to survive
The baseline requirement is static. Amerex's owner's manual for hand portables states: "UL specifies that a hanging device must withstand a vertical force of five times the weight of the charged extinguisher but not less than 100 pounds." A wall hanger meets that standing still; a vehicle adds vibration that walks fasteners loose, shock loads that can jump a latch, and weather that eats painted steel.
Amerex treats the bracket as a maintenance item: the dry chemical maintenance manual ends its procedure "making sure that it fits the bracket properly and the bracket is securely attached – replace the bracket if necessary." And on what belongs on a vehicle, the owner's manual is direct: "Use the mounting bracket furnished with the extinguisher or an approved Amerex vehicle bracket if required."
Standard steel strap brackets: the one-strap baseline
The workhorse family is a painted steel band with a single hinged strap and latch. The Parts Book assigns each one by valve type and capacity, verbatim:
- 845 — "All 1 lb., 1¼, 1.4 lb. Aluminum Valve Models"
- 817 — "All 2½ lb., 3 lb. Aluminum Valve Models"
- 818 — "All 5 lb., 5½ lb. Aluminum Valve Models"
- 821 — "All 5 lb., 5½ lb. Aluminum & Brass Valve Models"
- 808 — "All 6 lb., 9 lb., Aluminum & Brass Valve Models"
- 846 — "10 lb. Tall Aluminum & Brass Valve Models" (the family's one 2-strap member)
Most are offered in black under a B suffix — 845B, 817B, 818B. This is the duty grade for a pickup cab, work van, or forklift cage, and the family runs on shared serviceable parts — the Parts Book lists the 03412 rubber pad and 01264 rivet for "817, 818, 808, 821, 845, 846" and the 889 pair, plus the 03076-P white vinyl tip — so a bracket that has shed its cushioning gets new pads, not a new bracket.
The S models: a second strap for vibration, marine, and aviation duty
Add an S and you add a strap. The Parts Book lists 2-strap versions matching their single-strap parents' fitment: the 845S, 817S, 818S, and 821S. Amerex's catalog files the whole strap family — 845 through 821S, plus the 861H and 808 — under one heading: "Vehicle/Marine/Aviation Brackets." The second strap captures the cylinder at two points so a shock load can't pivot it out of a single latch.
The clearest duty evidence is what ships from the factory. The TS model suffix means the extinguisher ships with the 2-strap bracket — Amerex's price list describes the B417TS ABC unit simply as "2.5 ABC 2 STRAP" and the B500TS as "5.0 ABC 2 STRAP." The same strap family carries the 1 lb and 2.5 lb Purple K vehicle units we spec for race cars and hot rods. Heavy-duty box-type brackets: when a strap isn't enough
Above the strap families sits the construction for off-road equipment, fire apparatus, and machinery that hits things — the catalog's "Heavy-Duty Box-Type Vehicle Brackets." Instead of a band and latch, the cylinder sits in an enclosing frame cushioned by rubber grommet bumpers, retained by a pull pin on a chain. The line runs by cylinder diameter: the 807 at 4.25 in., the 809 for the 5–5.25 in. cylinder group, the 812 at 6 in., the 810 at 7 in., and the 811 at 8 in. The catalog adds that "Models 809, 810, and 811 are also available with an optional zinc primer undercoat (809Z / 810Z / 811Z)" — the black 809Z, 810Z, and 811Z versions we stock.
Both wear points are cataloged parts. The Parts Book lists the 13888-P — "Pull Pin and Chain Box Type Brackets," a stainless steel assembly — and the 01990-P rubber grommet bumper for "807, 809, 810, 811, 812, 860." A bracket that has lost its pin on a trail is restored with a bag of pins.
Rubber-strap brackets: the 860, 862, and 864
The rubber-strap family — 860, 862, and the 2-strap 864 — holds the cylinder with elastomer instead of a steel latch, and that makes the strap the sacrificial part: the Parts Book lists the 07166-P as "Rubber Strap - 860 & 862 Brackets" and the 07802-P as "Rubber Strap - 864 Bracket, 859 Dolly." The at-a-glance chart assigns them by size: 860 for the 3 and 4.25 in. models, 862 for the 5 in. class, 864 for 7 and 8 in. units. A strap gone hard in the sun gets renewed without touching the mounting bolts; the same 07802-P strap also serves the 859 dolly cart for "7” and 8” Diameter" cylinders. The related 861H — listed among the catalog's USCG brackets for the 4.25 in. 5 lb models — takes the 06858-P grommet bumper it shares with the 846 and the 889 pair.
889 fork vs 889HB pin hook
Two 10 lb brackets differ only in how they latch. The 889 is listed as "889 Bracket Assembly - 10 lb. 5” Dia. “Fork” Style" (P/N 16831); the 889HB as "889HB Bracket Assembly - 10 lb. 5” Dia. “Pin Hook”" (P/N 17148). Both share the 03412 pad, 01264 rivet, and 06858-P bumper with the strap families.
Corrosion duty: galvanized, Coast Guard, and non-magnetic
Corrosion is a duty Amerex tests for across the whole line: the catalog states that "All Amerex brackets meet the latest UL salt spray requirements (240 hrs. @ 20% salt solution—ASTM B117)." For the box-type family it goes further: the catalog's bracket page notes that the red box brackets are galvanized — the 809G at 5 in., 810G at 7 in., and 811G at 8 in., which the at-a-glance chart lists for USCG service on the Z-Series high performance units. One ordering detail: the 13958-P rubber grommet bumper is listed for "810G, 811G, 862, 864, 859," while the painted 809/810/811 take the 01990-P — order by the bracket you actually have.
Two specialty variants round out the 7-inch class. For the C260CG and C262CG — the wet chemical models marked "COAST GUARD APPROVED" — the catalog is unambiguous: "MUST USE 810CG BRACKET," the 810CG, sold separately. The 810NM is the non-magnetic bracket the chart pairs with the C270/C272 water mist units built with nonmagnetic construction "for use in MRI facilities to 11.7 Tesla." And the black 895 vehicle/marine bracket, listed for "All 6 lb., 10 lb. Aluminum & Brass Valve Models," carries its own 20619 and 13958 grommet bumpers.

Off the vehicle: the 868 I-beam bracket
One bracket in the line mounts to structure rather than sheet metal. The 868 I-beam bracket mounts a standard extinguisher bracket "across the flange of the beam" using beam clamps, rails, and clips; Amerex publishes the procedure as P/N 09179. On beam mounting, the owner's manual is blunt: "Special tools and fasteners are required – have extinguisher mounted by a professional fire extinguisher service company."
